Best Services Companies To Buy For 2014

Private companies’ optimism about the global economy is translating into plans for major capital spending projects and increased headcount over the next year, according to a new survey.

PwC US’s quarterly Trendsetter Barometer, released Tuesday, found that 59% chief executives and chief financial officers at privately held companies was upbeat about U.S. economic prospects for the next 12 months.

Moreover, 92% of private companies that sell abroad believed that the world economy was either growing or staying the same.

Only 8% of these companies — the lowest percentage in years, PwC said in a statement — described the global economy as slowing.

“Private businesses see resilience in the economic recovery, both at home and globally,” Rich Stovsky, U.S. leader of PwC’s private company services practice, said.

“This confidence is evident in the survey respondents’ strong revenue growth projections, which they put at over 8% for the next 12 months, with more than one-third of them expecting double-digit growth during that period.”

Morgans Hotel Group (MHGC) operates, owns, acquires, develops and redevelops boutique hotels, primarily in gateway cities and select resort markets in the U.S., Europe and other international locations and nightclubs, restaurants. This stock closed up 3.8% to $6.99 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $6.73-$7.06

    52-Week Range: $4.66-$8.15

    Tuesday's Volume: 388,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 196,219

From a technical perspective, MHGC spiked higher here right above its 200-day moving average of $6.45 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of MHGC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if MHGC manages to take out Tuesday's high of $7.06 and then once it takes out more near-term resistance at $7.20 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MHGC as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $6.41 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 196,219 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MHGC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $8 to its 52-week high at $8.15. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give MHGC a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to $10.

The price of Credit-Default Swaps (CDS) used to insure US government debt against the possibility of default climbed to 35.5 basis points Wednesday. That was the highest level in six months, and up from 32 basis points on Friday, September 27. But that level is still well below the 62 basis points it cost to insure US government debt against default at the time of last debt ceiling battle, in the summer of 2011. That was the highest level since the global financial crisis. (What this means is that an investor would pay 62,000 euros a year to insure 10 million euros of US Treasuries against a default in the next five years. The contract is denominated in euros to offset the impact of a default on the US dollar.) This insurance is getting more popular too, with these CDS contracts ranking as the fifteenth most traded of the contracts tracked by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. in the week through Sept. 27. That's up from a rank of 147th for the previous week.
